Proverbs 20:4

← Proverbs 20:3 Proverbs 20:4 (KJV) Proverbs 20:5 →
It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.
The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.
Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Strong's References
  • H2779 — חֹרֶף (chôreph, kho'-ref): from חָרַף (châraph) H2778; properly, the crop gathered, i.e. (by implication) the autumn (and winter) season; figuratively, ripeness of age; cold, winter (-house), youth.
  • H2790 — חָרַשׁ (chârash, khaw-rash'): a primitive root; to scratch, i.e. (by implication) to engrave, plough; hence (from the use of tools) to fabricate (of any material); figuratively, to devise (in a bad sense); hence (from the idea of secrecy) to be silent, to let alone; hence (by implication) to be deaf (as an accompaniment of dumbness); [idiom] altogether, cease, conceal, be deaf, devise, ear, graven, imagine, leave off speaking, hold peace, plow(-er, man), be quiet, rest, practise secretly, keep silence, be silent, speak not a word, be still, hold tongue, worker.
  • H6102 — עָצֵל (ʻâtsêl, aw-tsale'): from עָצַל (ʻâtsal) H6101; indolent; slothful, sluggard.

  • H7592 — שָׁאַל (shâʼal, shaw-al'): or שָׁאֵל (shâʼêl); a primitive root; to inquire; by implication, to request; by extension, to demand; ask (counsel, on), beg, borrow, lay to charge, consult, demand, desire, [idiom] earnestly, enquire, [phrase] greet, obtain leave, lend, pray, request, require, [phrase] salute, [idiom] straitly, [idiom] surely, wish.

The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Hebrew (Westminster Leningrad Codex) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:

  • H369 — אַיִן (ʼayin, ah'-yin): as if from a primitive root meaning to be nothing or not exist; a non-entity; generally used as a negative particle; else, except, fail, (father-) less, be gone, in(-curable), neither, never, no (where), none, nor, (any, thing), not, nothing, to nought, past, un(-searchable), well-nigh, without. Compare אַיִן (ʼayin) H370.
  • H3808 — לֹא (lôʼ, lo): or לוֹא (lôwʼ); or לֹה (lôh); (Deuteronomy 3:11), a primitive particle; not (the simple or abs. negation); by implication, no; often used with other particles; [idiom] before, [phrase] or else, ere, [phrase] except, ig(-norant), much, less, nay, neither, never, no((-ne), -r, (-thing)), ([idiom] as though...,(can-), for) not (out of), of nought, otherwise, out of, [phrase] surely, [phrase] as truly as, [phrase] of a truth, [phrase] verily, for want, [phrase] whether, without.
