1 Timothy 3:8

← 1 Timothy 3:7 1 Timothy 3:8 (KJV) 1 Timothy 3:9 →
Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

Strong's References
  • G146 — αἰσχροκερδής (aischrokerdḗs, ahee-skhrok-er-dace'): from αἰσχρός (aischrós) G150 and κέρδος (kérdos) (gain); sordid; given to (greedy of) filthy lucre
  • G1249 — διάκονος (diákonos, dee-ak'-on-os): probably from an obsolete διάκω (diákō) (to run on errands; compare διώκω (diṓkō) G1377); an attendant, i.e. (genitive case) a waiter (at table or in other menial duties); specially, a Christian teacher and pastor (technically, a deacon or deaconess); deacon, minister, servant
  • G1351 — δίλογος (dílogos, dil'-og-os): from δίς (dís) G1364 and λόγος (lógos) G3056; equivocal, i.e. telling a different story; double-tongued
  • G3361 — μή (mḗ, may): a primary particle of qualified negation (whereas οὐ (ou) G3756 expresses an absolute denial); (adverb) not, (conjunction) lest; also (as an interrogative implying a negative answer (whereas οὐ (ou) G3756 expects an affirmative one)) whether; any but (that), X forbear, + God forbid, + lack, lest, neither, never, no (X wise in), none, nor, (can-)not, nothing, that not, un(-taken), without. Often used in compounds in substantially the same relations. • G3631 — οἶνος (oînos, oy'-nos): a primary word (or perhaps of Hebrew origin (H3196)); "wine" (literally or figuratively); wine
  • G4183 — πολύς (polýs, pol-oos'): including the forms from the alternate πολλός (pollós); (singular) much (in any respect) or (plural) many; neuter (singular) as adverbial, largely; neuter (plural) as adverb or noun often, mostly, largely; abundant, + altogether, common, + far (passed, spent), (+ be of a) great (age, deal, -ly, while), long, many, much, oft(-en (-times)), plenteous, sore, straitly. Compare πλεῖστος (pleîstos) G4118, πλείων (pleíōn) G4119.
  • G4337 — προσέχω (proséchō, pros-ekh'-o): from πρός (prós) G4314 and ἔχω (échō) G2192; (figuratively) to hold the mind (3563 implied) towards, i.e. pay attention to, be cautious about, apply oneself to, adhere to; (give) attend(-ance, -ance at, -ance to, unto), beware, be given to, give (take) heed (to unto); have regard
  • G4586 — σεμνός (semnós, sem-nos'): from σέβομαι (sébomai) G4576; venerable, i.e. honorable; grave, honest
  • G5615 — ὡσαύτως (hōsaútōs, ho-sow'-toce): from ὡς (hōs) G5613 and an adverb from αὐτός (autós) G846; as thus, i.e. in the same way; even so, likewise, after the same (in like) manner
