|---|---|---|
Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.
|
And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people.
|
But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

Strong's References
- G223 — Ἀλέξανδρος (Aléxandros, al-ex'-an-dros): from the same as (the first part of) ἀλέκτωρ (aléktōr) G220 and ἀνήρ (anḗr) G435; man-defender; Alexander, the name of three Israelites and one other man; Alexander
- G626 — ἀπολογέομαι (apologéomai, ap-ol-og-eh'-om-ahee): middle voice from a compound of ἀπό (apó) G575 and λόγος (lógos) G3056; to give an account (legal plea) of oneself, i.e. exculpate (self); answer (for self), make defence, excuse (self), speak for self
- G846 — αὐτός (autós, ow-tos'): from the particle αὖ (aû) (perhaps akin to the base of ἀήρ (aḗr) G109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative ἑαυτοῦ (heautoû) G1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons; her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which. Compare αὑτοῦ (hautoû) G848.

- G1218 — δῆμος (dēmos, day'-mos): from δέω (déō) G1210; the public (as bound together socially); people
- G1537 — ἐκ (ek, ek): a primary preposition denoting origin (the point whence action or motion proceeds), from, out (of place, time, or cause; literal or figurative; direct or remote); after, among, X are, at, betwixt(-yond), by (the means of), exceedingly, (+ abundantly above), for(- th), from (among, forth, up), + grudgingly, + heartily, X heavenly, X hereby, + very highly, in, …ly, (because, by reason) of, off (from), on, out among (from, of), over, since, X thenceforth, through, X unto, X vehemently, with(-out). Often used in composition, with the same general import; often of completion.
- G2309 — θέλω (thélō, thel'-o): apparently strengthened from the alternate form of αἱρέομαι (hairéomai) G138; to determine (as an active option from subjective impulse; whereas βούλομαι (boúlomai) G1014 properly denotes rather a passive acquiescence in objective considerations), i.e. choose or prefer (literally or figuratively); by implication, to wish, i.e. be inclined to (sometimes adverbially, gladly); impersonally for the future tense, to be about to; by Hebraism, to delight in; desire, be disposed (forward), intend, list, love, mean, please, have rather, (be) will (have, -ling, - ling(-ly))
- G2453 — Ἰουδαῖος (Ioudaîos, ee-oo-dah'-yos): from Ἰουδά (Ioudá) G2448 (in the sense of Ἰούδας (Ioúdas) G2455 as a country); Judæan, i.e. belonging to Jehudah; Jew(-ess), of Judæa
- G2678 — κατασείω (kataseíō, kat-as-i'-o): from κατά (katá) G2596 and σείω (seíō) G4579; to sway downward, i.e. make a signal; beckon
- G3793 — ὄχλος (óchlos, okh'los): from a derivative of ἔχω (échō) G2192 (meaning a vehicle); a throng (as borne along); by implication, the rabble; by extension, a class of people; figuratively, a riot; company, multitude, number (of people), people, press
- G4261 — προβάλλω (probállō, prob-al'-lo): from πρό (pró) G4253 and βάλλω (bállō) G906; to throw forward, i.e. push to the front, germinate; put forward, shoot forth
- G4264 — προβιβάζω (probibázō, prob-ib-ad'-zo): from πρό (pró) G4253 and a reduplicated form of βιάζω (biázō) G971; to force forward, i.e. bring to the front, instigate; draw, before instruct
- G5495 — χείρ (cheír, khire): perhaps from the base of χειμών (cheimṓn) G5494 in the sense of its congener the base of χάσμα (chásma) G5490 (through the idea of hollowness for grasping); the hand (literally or figuratively (power); especially (by Hebraism) a means or instrument); hand
The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Greek (Textus Receptus, Scrivener 1894) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:
