Matthew 7:16
| ← Matthew 7:15 [words of Jesus] | Matthew 7:16 (KJV) [words of Jesus] | Matthew 7:17 [words of Jesus] → |
|---|---|---|
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
|
Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
|
Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

In composition (as a prefix) it usually denotes separation, departure, cessation, completion, reversal, etc.
- G846 — αὐτός (autós, ow-tos'): from the particle αὖ (aû) (perhaps akin to the base of ἀήρ (aḗr) G109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative ἑαυτοῦ (heautoû) G1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons; her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which. Compare αὑτοῦ (hautoû) G848.

- G2228 — ἤ (ḗ, ay): a primary particle of distinction between two connected terms; disjunctive, or; comparative, than; and, but (either), (n-)either, except it be, (n-)or (else), rather, save, than, that, what, yea. - G2590 — καρπός (karpós, kar-pos'): probably from the base of ἁρπάζω (harpázō) G726; fruit (as plucked), literally or figuratively; fruit
- G3385 — μήτι (mḗti, may'-tee): from μή (mḗ) G3361 and the neuter of τὶς (tìs) G5100; whether at all; not (the particle usually not expressed, except by the form of the question)
- G4718 — σταφυλή (staphylḗ, staf-oo-lay'): probably from the base of στέφανος (stéphanos) G4735; a cluster of grapes (as if intertwined); grapes
- G4810 — σῦκον (sŷkon, soo'-kon): apparently a primary word; a fig; fig
- G4816 — συλλέγω (syllégō, sool-leg'-o): from σύν (sýn) G4862 and λέγω (légō) G3004 in its original sense; to collect; gather (together, up)
- G5146 — τρίβολος (tríbolos, trib'-ol-os): from τρεῖς (treîs) G5140 and βέλος (bélos) G956; properly, a crow-foot (three-pronged obstruction in war), i.e. (by analogy) a thorny plant (caltrop); brier, thistle
The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Greek (Textus Receptus, Scrivener 1894) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:
- G3588 — ὁ (ho, ho): the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom); the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc
