| ← Luke 8:4 | Luke 8:5 (KJV) [words of Jesus] | Luke 8:6 [words of Jesus] → |
|---|---|---|
And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable:
|
A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.
|
And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.

Strong's References
- G846 — αὐτός (autós, ow-tos'): from the particle αὖ (aû) (perhaps akin to the base of ἀήρ (aḗr) G109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative ἑαυτοῦ (heautoû) G1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons; her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which. Compare αὑτοῦ (hautoû) G848.
- G1722 — ἐν (en, en): a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between εἰς (eis) G1519 and ἐκ (ek) G1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.; about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (… sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.
- G1831 — ἐξέρχομαι (exérchomai, ex-er'-khom-ahee): from ἐκ (ek) G1537 and ἔρχομαι (érchomai) G2064; to issue (literally or figuratively); come (forth, out), depart (out of), escape, get out, go (abroad, away, forth, out, thence), proceed (forth), spread abroad
- G2532 — καί (kaí, kahee): apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words; and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet
- G2662 — καταπατέω (katapatéō, kat-ap-at-eh'-o): from κατά (katá) G2596 and πατέω (patéō) G3961; to trample down; figuratively, to reject with disdain; trample, tread (down, underfoot)
- G2719 — κατεσθίω (katesthíō, kat-es-thee'-o): from κατά (katá) G2596 and ἐσθίω (esthíō) G2068 (including its alternate); to eat down, i.e. devour (literally or figuratively); devour
- G3303 — μέν (mén, men): a primary particle; properly, indicative of affirmation or concession (in fact); usually followed by a contrasted clause with δέ (dé) G1161 (this one, the former, etc.); even, indeed, so, some, truly, verily. Often compounded with other particles in an intensive or asseverative sense.
- G3598 — ὁδός (hodós, hod-os'): apparently a primary word; a road; by implication, a progress (the route, act or distance); figuratively, a mode or means; journey, (high-)way
- G3739 — ὅς (hós, hos): probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article ὁ (ho) G3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that; one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc. See also οὗ (hoû) G3757.
- G3772 — οὐρανός (ouranós, oo-ran-os'): perhaps from the same as ὄρος (óros) G3735 (through the idea of elevation); the sky; by extension, heaven (as the abode of God); by implication, happiness, power, eternity; specially, the Gospel (Christianity); air, heaven(-ly), sky
- G3844 — παρά (pará, par-ah'): a primary preposition; properly, near; i.e. (with genitive case) from beside (literally or figuratively), (with dative case) at (or in) the vicinity of (objectively or subjectively), (with accusative case) to the proximity with (local (especially beyond or opposed to) or causal (on account of); above, against, among, at, before, by, contrary to, X friend, from, + give (such things as they), + that (she) had, X his, in, more than, nigh unto, (out) of, past, save, side…by, in the sight of, than, (there-)fore, with. In compounds it retains the same variety of application.
- G4071 — πετεινόν (peteinón, pet-i-non'): neuter of a derivative of πέτομαι (pétomai) G4072; a flying animal, i.e. bird; bird, fowl
- G4098 — πίπτω (píptō, pip'-to): probably akin to πέτομαι (pétomai) G4072 through the idea of alighting; to fall (literally or figuratively); fail, fall (down), light on
- G4687 — σπείρω (speírō, spi'-ro): probably strengthened from σπάω (spáō) G4685 (through the idea of extending); to scatter, i.e. sow (literally or figuratively); sow(- er), receive seed
- G4703 — σπόρος (spóros, spro'-os): from σπείρω (speírō) G4687; a scattering (of seed), i.e. (concretely) seed (as sown); seed (X sown)
The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Greek (Textus Receptus, Scrivener 1894) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:
