Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.
|
And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.
|
The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.

הַרְבֵּֽה |
har.Beh | H7235 | HVha | (surely) a multitude |
- H239 — אָזַן (ʼâzan, aw-zan'): a primitive root (rather identical with אָזַן (ʼâzan) H238 through the idea of scales as if two ears); to weigh, i.e. (figuratively) ponder; give good heed.
- H1847 — דַּעַת (daʻath, dah'-ath): from יָדַע (yâdaʻ) H3045; knowledge; cunning, (ig-) norantly, know(-ledge), (un-) awares (wittingly).
- H2450 — חָכָם (châkâm, khaw-kawm'): from חָכַם (châkam) H2449; wise, (i.e. intelligent, skilful or artful); cunning (man), subtil, (un-), wise((hearted), man).
- H2713 — חָקַר (châqar, khaw-kar'): a primitive root; properly, to penetrate; hence, to examine intimately; find out, (make) search (out), seek (out), sound, try.
- H3148 — יוֹתֵר (yôwthêr, yo-thare'): active participle of יָתַר (yâthar) H3498; properly, redundant; hence, over and above, as adjective, noun, adverb or conjunction; better, more(-over), over, profit.
- H3925 — לָמַד (lâmad, law-mad'): a primitive root; properly, to goad, i.e. (by implication) to teach (the rod being an Oriental incentive); (un-) accustomed, [idiom] diligently, expert, instruct, learn, skilful, teach(-er, -ing).
- H4912 — מָשָׁל (mâshâl, maw-shawl'): apparently from מָשַׁל (mâshal) H4910 in some original sense of superiority in mental action; properly, a pithy maxim, usually of metaphorical nature; hence, a simile (as an adage, poem, discourse); byword, like, parable, proverb.
- H5971 — עַם (ʻam, am): from עָמַם (ʻâmam) H6004; a people (as a congregated unit); specifically, a tribe (as those of Israel); hence (collectively) troops or attendants; figuratively, a flock; folk, men, nation, people.
- H6953 — קֹהֶלֶת (qôheleth, ko-heh'-leth): feminine of active participle from קָהַל (qâhal) H6950; a (female) assembler (i.e. lecturer); abstractly, preaching (used as a 'nom de plume', Koheleth); preacher.
- H7235 — רָבָה (râbâh, raw-baw'): a primitive root; to increase (in whatever respect); (bring in) abundance ([idiom] -antly), [phrase] archer (by mistake for רָבַב (râbab) H7232), be in authority, bring up, [idiom] continue, enlarge, excel, exceeding(-ly), be full of, (be, make) great(-er, -ly, [idiom] -ness), grow up, heap, increase, be long, (be, give, have, make, use) many (a time), (any, be, give, give the, have) more (in number), (ask, be, be so, gather, over, take, yield) much (greater, more), (make to) multiply, nourish, plenty(-eous), [idiom] process (of time), sore, store, thoroughly, very.
- H8626 — תָּקַן (tâqan, taw-kan'): a primitive root; to equalize, i.e. straighten (intransitive or transitive); figuratively, to compose; set in order, make straight.
The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Hebrew (Westminster Leningrad Codex) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:
- H853 — אֵת (ʼêth, ayth): apparent contracted from אוֹת (ʼôwth) H226 in the demonstrative sense of entity; properly, self (but generally used to point out more definitely the object of a verb or preposition, even or namely); (as such unrepresented in English).
- H1961 — הָיָה (hâyâh, haw-yaw): a primitive root (compare הָוָא (hâvâʼ) H1933); to exist, i.e. be or become, come to pass (always emphatic, and not a mere copula or auxiliary); beacon, [idiom] altogether, be(-come), accomplished, committed, like), break, cause, come (to pass), do, faint, fall, [phrase] follow, happen, [idiom] have, last, pertain, quit (one-) self, require, [idiom] use.
- H5750 — עוֹד (ʻôwd, ode): or עֹד (ʻôd); from עוּד (ʻûwd) H5749; properly, iteration or continuance; used only adverbially (with or without preposition), again, repeatedly, still, more; again, [idiom] all life long, at all, besides, but, else, further(-more), henceforth, (any) longer, (any) more(-over), [idiom] once, since, (be) still, when, (good, the) while (having being), (as, because, whether, while) yet (within).
