James 3:11
| ← James 3:10 | James 3:11 (KJV) | James 3:12 → |
|---|---|---|
Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
|
Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
|
Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

Strong's References
- G846 — αὐτός (autós, ow-tos'): from the particle αὖ (aû) (perhaps akin to the base of ἀήρ (aḗr) G109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative ἑαυτοῦ (heautoû) G1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons; her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which. Compare αὑτοῦ (hautoû) G848.
- G1032 — βρύω (brýō, broo'-o): a primary verb; to swell out, i.e. (by implication) to gush; send forth
- G1099 — γλυκύς (glykýs, gloo-koos'): of uncertain affinity; sweet (i.e. not bitter nor salt); sweet, fresh
- G1537 — ἐκ (ek, ek): a primary preposition denoting origin (the point whence action or motion proceeds), from, out (of place, time, or cause; literal or figurative; direct or remote); after, among, X are, at, betwixt(-yond), by (the means of), exceedingly, (+ abundantly above), for(- th), from (among, forth, up), + grudgingly, + heartily, X heavenly, X hereby, + very highly, in, …ly, (because, by reason) of, off (from), on, out among (from, of), over, since, X thenceforth, through, X unto, X vehemently, with(-out). Often used in composition, with the same general import; often of completion.
- G2532 — καί (kaí, kahee): apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words; and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet
- G3385 — μήτι (mḗti, may'-tee): from μή (mḗ) G3361 and the neuter of τὶς (tìs) G5100; whether at all; not (the particle usually not expressed, except by the form of the question)
- G3692 — ὀπή (opḗ, op-ay'): probably from ὀπτάνομαι (optánomai) G3700; a hole (as if for light), i.e. cavern; by analogy, a spring (of water); cave, place
- G4077 — πηγή (pēgḗ, pay-gay'): probably from πήγνυμι (pḗgnymi) G4078 (through the idea of gushing plumply); a fount (literally or figuratively), i.e. source or supply (of water, blood, enjoyment) (not necessarily the original spring); fountain, well
- G4089 — πικρός (pikrós, pik-ros'): perhaps from πήγνυμι (pḗgnymi) G4078 (through the idea of piercing); sharp (pungent), i.e. acrid (literally or figuratively); bitter
The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Greek (Textus Receptus, Scrivener 1894) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:
- G3588 — ὁ (ho, ho): the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom); the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc
