2 Samuel 18:17

← 2 Samuel 18:16 2 Samuel 18:17 (KJV) 2 Samuel 18:18 →
And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for Joab held back the people.
And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him: and all Israel fled every one to his tent.
Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king's dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom's place.

Strong's References
  • H53 — אֲבִישָׁלוֹם (ʼĂbîyshâlôwm, ab-ee-shaw-lome'): or (shortened) אַבְשָׁלוֹם (ʼAbshâlôwm) ; from אָב (ʼâb) H1 and שָׁלוֹם (shâlôwm) H7965; father of peace (i.e. friendly); Abshalom, a son of David; also (the fuller form) a later Israelite; Abishalom, Absalom.
  • H68 — אֶבֶן (ʼeben, eh'-ben): from the root of בָּנָה (bânâh) H1129 through the meaning to build; a stone; [phrase] carbuncle, [phrase] mason, [phrase] plummet, (chalk-, hail-, head-, sling-) stone(-ny), (divers) weight(-s).
  • H168 — אֹהֶל (ʼôhel, o'-hel): from אָהַל (ʼâhal) H166; a tent (as clearly conspicuous from a distance); covering, (dwelling) (place), home, tabernacle, tent.
  • H376 — אִישׁ (ʼîysh, eesh): contracted for אֱנוֹשׁ (ʼĕnôwsh) H582 (or perhaps rather from an unused root meaning to be extant); a man as an individual or a male person; often used as an adjunct to a more definite term (and in such cases frequently not expressed in translation); also, another, any (man), a certain, [phrase] champion, consent, each, every (one), fellow, (foot-, husband-) man, (good-, great, mighty) man, he, high (degree), him (that is), husband, man(-kind), [phrase] none, one, people, person, [phrase] steward, what (man) soever, whoso(-ever), worthy. Compare אִשָּׁה (ʼishshâh) H802.
  • H1419 — גָּדוֹל (gâdôwl, gaw-dole'): or גָּדֹל (gâdôl); (shortened) from גָּדַל (gâdal) H1431; great (in any sense); hence, older; also insolent; [phrase] aloud, elder(-est), [phrase] exceeding(-ly), [phrase] far, (man of) great (man, matter, thing,-er,-ness), high, long, loud, mighty, more, much, noble, proud thing, [idiom] sore, ([idiom]) very.
  • H1530 — גַּל (gal, gal): from גָּלַל (gâlal) H1556; something rolled, i.e. a heap of stone or dung (plural ruins), by analogy, a spring of water (plural waves); billow, heap, spring, wave.
  • H3293 — יַעַר (yaʻar, yah'-ar): from an unused root probably meaning to thicken with verdure; a copse of bushes; hence, a forest; hence, honey in the comb (as hived in trees); (honey-) comb, forest, wood.
  • H3478 — יִשְׂרָאֵל (Yisrâʼêl, yis-raw-ale'): from שָׂרָה (sârâh) H8280 and אֵל (ʼêl) H410; he will rule as God; Jisrael, a symbolical name of Jacob; also (typically) of his posterity; Israel.
  • H3947 — לָקַח (lâqach, law-kakh'): a primitive root; to take (in the widest variety of applications); accept, bring, buy, carry away, drawn, fetch, get, infold, [idiom] many, mingle, place, receive(-ing), reserve, seize, send for, take (away, -ing, up), use, win.
  • H3966 — מְאֹד (mᵉʼôd, meh-ode'): from the same as אוּד (ʼûwd) H181; properly, vehemence, i.e. (with or without preposition) vehemently; by implication, wholly, speedily, etc. (often with other words as an intensive or superlative; especially when repeated); diligently, especially, exceeding(-ly), far, fast, good, great(-ly), [idiom] louder and louder, might(-ily, -y), (so) much, quickly, (so) sore, utterly, very ([phrase] much, sore), well.
  • H5127 — נוּס (nûwç, noos): a primitive root; to flit, i.e. vanish away (subside, escape; causatively, chase, impel, deliver); [idiom] abate, away, be displayed, (make to) flee (away, -ing), put to flight, [idiom] hide, lift up a standard.
  • H5324 — נָצַב (nâtsab, naw-tsab'): a primitive root; to station, in various applications (literally or figuratively); appointed, deputy, erect, establish, [idiom] Huzzah (by mistake for a proper name), lay, officer, pillar, present, rear up, set (over, up), settle, sharpen, establish, (make to) stand(-ing, still, up, upright), best state.
  • H6354 — פַּחַת (pachath, pakh'-ath): probably from an unused root apparently meaning to dig; a pit, especially forcatching animals; hole, pit, snare.
  • H7993 — שָׁלַךְ (shâlak, shaw-lak): a primitive root; to throw out, down or away (literally or figuratively); adventure, cast (away, down, forth, off, out), hurl, pluck, throw.

  • H3605 — כֹּל (kôl, kole): or (Jeremiah 33:8) כּוֹל (kôwl); from כָּלַל (kâlal) H3634; properly, the whole; hence, all, any or every (in the singular only, but often in a plural sense); (in) all (manner, (ye)), altogether, any (manner), enough, every (one, place, thing), howsoever, as many as, (no-) thing, ought, whatsoever, (the) whole, whoso(-ever).
