Mark 8:36

← Mark 8:35 [words of Jesus] Mark 8:36 (KJV) [words of Jesus] Mark 8:37 [words of Jesus] →
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Strong's References
  • G444 — ἄνθρωπος (ánthrōpos, anth'-ro-pos): from ἀνήρ (anḗr) G435 and ὤψ (ṓps) (the countenance; from ὀπτάνομαι (optánomai) G3700); man-faced, i.e. a human being; certain, man
  • G846 — αὐτός (autós, ow-tos'): from the particle αὖ (aû) (perhaps akin to the base of ἀήρ (aḗr) G109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative ἑαυτοῦ (heautoû) G1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons; her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which. Compare αὑτοῦ (hautoû) G848.
  • G1063 — γάρ (gár, gar): a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles); and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet
  • G1437 — ἐάν (eán, eh-an'): from εἰ (ei) G1487 and ἄν (án) G302; a conditional particle; in case that, provided, etc.; often used in connection with other particles to denote indefiniteness or uncertainty; before, but, except, (and) if, (if) so, (what-, whither-)soever, though, when (-soever), whether (or), to whom, (who-)so(-ever). See μή (mḗ) G3361.
  • G2210 — ζημιόω (zēmióō, dzay-mee-o'-o): from ζημία (zēmía) G2209; to injure, i.e. (reflexively or passively) to experience detriment; be cast away, receive damage, lose, suffer loss
  • G2532 — καί (kaí, kahee): apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words; and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet
  • G2770 — κερδαίνω (kerdaínō, ker-dah'-ee-no): from κέρδος (kérdos) G2771; to gain (literally or figuratively); (get) gain, win
  • G2889 — κόσμος (kósmos, kos'-mos): probably from the base of κομίζω (komízō) G2865; orderly arrangement, i.e. decoration; by implication, the world (in a wide or narrow sense, including its inhabitants, literally or figuratively (morally)); adorning, world
  • G3650 — ὅλος (hólos, hol'-os): a primary word; "whole" or "all", i.e. complete (in extent, amount, time or degree), especially (neuter) as noun or adverb; all, altogether, every whit, + throughout, whole
  • G5101 — τίς (tís, tis): probably emphatic of τὶς (tìs) G5100; an interrogative pronoun, who, which or what (in direct or indirect questions); every man, how (much), + no(-ne, thing), what (manner, thing), where (-by, -fore, -of, -unto, - with, -withal), whether, which, who(-m, -se), why
  • G5590 — ψυχή (psychḗ, psoo-khay'): from ψύχω (psýchō) G5594; breath, i.e. (by implication) spirit, abstractly or concretely (the animal sentient principle only; thus distinguished on the one hand from πνεῦμα (pneûma) G4151, which is the rational and immortal soul; and on the other from ζωή (zōḗ) G2222, which is mere vitality, even of plants: these terms thus exactly correspond respectively to the Hebrew H5315, H7307 and H2416); heart (+ -ily), life, mind, soul, + us, + you
  • G5623 — ὠφελέω (ōpheléō, o-fel-eh'-o): from the same as ὠφέλεια (ōphéleia) G5622; to be useful, i.e. to benefit; advantage, better, prevail, profit

The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Greek (Textus Receptus, Scrivener 1894) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:

  • G3588 — ὁ (ho, ho): the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom); the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc
