Acts 7:18

← Acts 7:17 Acts 7:18 (KJV) Acts 7:19 →
But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.
The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.

  • G935 — βασιλεύς (basileús, bas-il-yooce'): probably from βάσις (básis) G939 (through the notion of a foundation of power); a sovereign (abstractly, relatively, or figuratively); king
  • G1492 — εἴδω (eídō, i'-do): a primary verb; used only in certain past tenses, the others being borrowed from the equivalent ὀπτάνομαι (optánomai) G3700 and ὁράω (horáō) G3708; properly, to see (literally or figuratively); by implication, (in the perfect tense only) to know; be aware, behold, X can (+ not tell), consider, (have) know(-ledge), look (on), perceive, see, be sure, tell, understand, wish, wot. Compare ὀπτάνομαι (optánomai) G3700.
  • G2087 — ἕτερος (héteros, het'-er-os): of uncertain affinity; (an-, the) other or different; altered, else, next (day), one, (an-)other, some, strange
  • G2501 — Ἰωσήφ (Iōsḗph, ee-o-safe'): of Hebrew origin (H3130); Joseph, the name of seven Israelites; Joseph
  • G3739 — ὅς (hós, hos): probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article ὁ (ho) G3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that; one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc. See also οὗ (hoû) G3757.
  • G3756 — οὐ (ou, oo): a primary word; the absolute negative (compare μή (mḗ) G3361) adverb; no or not; + long, nay, neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special, un(-worthy), when, + without, + yet but. See also οὐ μή (ou mḗ) G3364, μῆκος (mēkos) G3372.

The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Greek (Textus Receptus, Scrivener 1894) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:

  • G3588 — ὁ (ho, ho): the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom); the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc
  • G3757 — οὗ (hoû, hoo): genitive case of ὅς (hós) G3739 as adverb; at which place, i.e. where; where(-in), whither(-soever)
