Matthew 5:34

← Matthew 5:33 [words of Jesus] Matthew 5:34 (KJV) [words of Jesus] Matthew 5:35 [words of Jesus] →
Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:
But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:
Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.

  • G1473 — ἐγώ (egṓ, eg-o'): a primary pronoun of the first person; I (only expressed when emphatic); I, me. For the other cases and the plural see ἐμέ (emé) G1691, ἐμοί (emoí) G1698, ἐμοῦ (emoû) G1700, ἡμᾶς (hēmâs) G2248, ἡμεῖς (hēmeîs) G2249, ἡμῖν (hēmîn) G2254, ἡμῶν (hēmōn) G2257, etc.
  • G1722 — ἐν (en, en): a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between εἰς (eis) G1519 and ἐκ (ek) G1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.; about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (… sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). • G3004 — λέγω (légō, leg'-o): a primary verb; properly, to "lay" forth, i.e. (figuratively) relate (in words (usually of systematic or set discourse; whereas ἔπω (épō) G2036 and φημί (phēmí) G5346 generally refer to an individual expression or speech respectively; while ῥέω (rhéō) G4483 is properly to break silence merely, and λαλέω (laléō) G2980 means an extended or random harangue)); by implication, to mean; ask, bid, boast, call, describe, give out, name, put forth, say(-ing, on), shew, speak, tell, utter
  • G3361 — μή (mḗ, may): a primary particle of qualified negation (whereas οὐ (ou) G3756 expresses an absolute denial); (adverb) not, (conjunction) lest; also (as an interrogative implying a negative answer (whereas οὐ (ou) G3756 expects an affirmative one)) whether; any but (that), X forbear, + God forbid, + lack, lest, neither, never, no (X wise in), none, nor, (can-)not, nothing, that not, un(-taken), without. Often used in compounds in substantially the same relations. See also ἐὰν μή (eàn mḗ) G3362, ἵνα μή (hína mḗ) G3363, οὐ μή (ou mḗ) G3364, μῆκος (mēkos) G3372, μηκύνω (mēkýnō) G3373, μήν (mḗn) G3375, μὴ οὐκ (mḕ ouk) G3378.

  • G3772 — οὐρανός (ouranós, oo-ran-os'): perhaps from the same as ὄρος (óros) G3735 (through the idea of elevation); the sky; by extension, heaven (as the abode of God); by implication, happiness, power, eternity; specially, the Gospel (Christianity); air, heaven(-ly), sky
