Matthew 20:31

← Matthew 20:30 Matthew 20:31 (KJV) Matthew 20:32 [words of Jesus] →
And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.
And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.
And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you?

Strong's References
  • G846 — αὐτός (autós, ow-tos'): from the particle αὖ (aû) (perhaps akin to the base of ἀήρ (aḗr) G109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative ἑαυτοῦ (heautoû) G1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons; her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which. Compare αὑτοῦ (hautoû) G848.
  • G1138 — Δαβίδ (Dabíd, dab-eed'): of Hebrew origin (H1732); Dabid (i.e. David), the Israelite king; David
  • G1161 — δέ (dé, deh): a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.; also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English)
  • G1653 — ἐλεέω (eleéō, el-eh-eh'-o): from ἔλεος (éleos) G1656; to compassionate (by word or deed, specially, by divine grace); have compassion (pity on), have (obtain, receive, shew) mercy (on)
  • G2008 — ἐπιτιμάω (epitimáō, ep-ee-tee-mah'-o): from ἐπί (epí) G1909 and τιμάω (timáō) G5091; to tax upon, i.e. censure or admonish; by implication, forbid; (straitly) charge, rebuke
  • G2248 — ἡμᾶς (hēmâs, hay-mas'): accusative case plural of ἐγώ (egṓ) G1473; us; our, us, we
  • G2443 — ἵνα (hína, hin'-ah): probably from the same as the former part of ἑαυτοῦ (heautoû) G1438 (through the demonstrative idea; compare ὁ (ho) G3588); in order that (denoting the purpose or the result); albeit, because, to the intent (that), lest, so as, (so) that, (for) to. Compare ἵνα μή (hína mḗ) G3363.
  • G2896 — κράζω (krázō, krad'-zo): a primary verb; properly, to "croak" (as a raven) or scream, i.e. (genitive case) to call aloud (shriek, exclaim, intreat); cry (out)
  • G2962 — κύριος (kýrios, koo'-ree-os): from κῦρος (kŷros) (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title); God, Lord, master, Sir
  • G3004 — λέγω (légō, leg'-o): a primary verb; properly, to "lay" forth, i.e. (figuratively) relate (in words (usually of systematic or set discourse; whereas ἔπω (épō) G2036 and φημί (phēmí) G5346 generally refer to an individual expression or speech respectively; while ῥέω (rhéō) G4483 is properly to break silence merely, and λαλέω (laléō) G2980 means an extended or random harangue)); by implication, to mean; ask, bid, boast, call, describe, give out, name, put forth, say(-ing, on), shew, speak, tell, utter
  • G3185 — μεῖζον (meîzon, mide'-zon): neuter of μείζων (meízōn) G3187; (adverbially) in greater degree; the more
  • G3793 — ὄχλος (óchlos, okh'los): from a derivative of ἔχω (échō) G2192 (meaning a vehicle); a throng (as borne along); by implication, the rabble; by extension, a class of people; figuratively, a riot; company, multitude, number (of people), people, press
  • G4623 — σιωπάω (siōpáō, see-o-pah'-o): from σιωπή (siōpḗ) (silence, i.e. a hush; properly, muteness, i.e. involuntary stillness, or inability to speak; and thus differing from σιγή (sigḗ) G4602, which is rather a voluntary refusal or indisposition to speak, although the terms are often used synonymously); to be dumb (but not deaf also, like 2974 properly); figuratively, to be calm (as quiet water); dumb, (hold) peace
  • G5207 — υἱός (huiós, hwee-os'): apparently a primary word; a "son" (sometimes of animals), used very widely of immediate, remote or figuratively, kinship; child, foal, son

The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Greek (Textus Receptus, Scrivener 1894) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:

  • G3588 — ὁ (ho, ho): the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom); the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc
