Mark 12:20
| ← Mark 12:19 | Mark 12:20 (KJV) | Mark 12:21 → |
|---|---|---|
Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
|
Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed.
|
And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise.

Strong's References
- G80 — ἀδελφός (adelphós, ad-el-fos'): from Α (A) G1 (as a connective particle) and δελφύς (delphýs) (the womb); a brother (literally or figuratively) near or remote (much like Α (A) G1); brother
- G599 — ἀποθνήσκω (apothnḗskō, ap-oth-nace'-ko): from ἀπό (apó) G575 and θνήσκω (thnḗskō) G2348; to die off (literally or figuratively); be dead, death, die, lie a-dying, be slain (X with)
- G863 — ἀφίημι (aphíēmi, af-ee'-ay-mee): from ἀπό (apó) G575 and ἵημι (híēmi) (to send; an intensive form of εἶμι (eîmi), to go); to send forth, in various applications (as follow); cry, forgive, forsake, lay aside, leave, let (alone, be, go, have), omit, put (send) away, remit, suffer, yield up
- G1135 — γυνή (gynḗ, goo-nay'): probably from the base of γίνομαι (gínomai) G1096; a woman; specially, a wife; wife, woman
- G2033 — ἑπτά (heptá, hep-tah'): a primary number; seven; seven
- G2258 — ἦν (ēn, ane): imperfect of εἰμί (eimí) G1510; I (thou, etc.) was (wast or were); + agree, be, X have (+ charge of), hold, use, was(-t), were
- G2532 — καί (kaí, kahee): apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words; and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet
- G2983 — λαμβάνω (lambánō, lam-ban'-o): a prolonged form of a primary verb, which is use only as an alternate in certain tenses; to take (in very many applications, literally and figuratively (properly objective or active, to get hold of; whereas δέχομαι (déchomai) G1209 is rather subjective or passive, to have offered to one; while αἱρέομαι (hairéomai) G138 is more violent, to seize or remove)); accept, + be amazed, assay, attain, bring, X when I call, catch, come on (X unto), + forget, have, hold, obtain, receive (X after), take (away, up)
- G3756 — οὐ (ou, oo): a primary word; the absolute negative (compare μή (mḗ) G3361) adverb; no or not; + long, nay, neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special, un(-worthy), when, + without, + yet but. See also οὐ μή (ou mḗ) G3364, μῆκος (mēkos) G3372.
- G4413 — πρῶτος (prōtos, pro'-tos): contracted superlative of πρό (pró) G4253; foremost (in time, place, order or importance); before, beginning, best, chief(-est), first (of all), former
- G4690 — σπέρμα (spérma, sper'-mah): from σπείρω (speírō) G4687; something sown, i.e. seed (including the male "sperm"); by implication, offspring; specially, a remnant (figuratively, as if kept over for planting); issue, seed
The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Greek (Textus Receptus, Scrivener 1894) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:
- G3588 — ὁ (ho, ho): the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom); the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc
- G3767 — οὖν (oûn, oon): apparently a primary word; (adverbially) certainly, or (conjunctionally) accordingly; and (so, truly), but, now (then), so (likewise then), then, therefore, verily, wherefore
