John 12:7

← John 12:6 John 12:7 (KJV) [words of Jesus] John 12:8 [words of Jesus] →
This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.
Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.
For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.

Strong's References
  • G846 — αὐτός (autós, ow-tos'): from the particle αὖ (aû) (perhaps akin to the base of ἀήρ (aḗr) G109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative ἑαυτοῦ (heautoû) G1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons; her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which. Compare αὑτοῦ (hautoû) G848.
  • G863 — ἀφίημι (aphíēmi, af-ee'-ay-mee): from ἀπό (apó) G575 and ἵημι (híēmi) (to send; an intensive form of εἶμι (eîmi), to go); to send forth, in various applications (as follow); cry, forgive, forsake, lay aside, leave, let (alone, be, go, have), omit, put (send) away, remit, suffer, yield up
  • G1519 — εἰς (eis, ice): a primary preposition; to or into (indicating the point reached or entered), of place, time, or (figuratively) purpose (result, etc.); also in adverbial phrases; (abundant-)ly, against, among, as, at, (back-)ward, before, by, concerning, + continual, + far more exceeding, for (intent, purpose), fore, + forth, in (among, at, unto, -so much that, -to), to the intent that, + of one mind, + never, of, (up-)on, + perish, + set at one again, (so) that, therefore(-unto), throughout, til, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-)until(-to), …ward, (where-)fore, with. Often used in composition with the same general import, but only with verbs (etc.) expressing motion (literally or figuratively).
  • G1780 — ἐνταφιασμός (entaphiasmós, en-taf-ee-as-mos'): from ἐνταφιάζω (entaphiázō) G1779; preparation for interment; burying
  • G2036 — ἔπω (épō, ep'-o): a primary verb (used only in the definite past tense, the others being borrowed from ἐρέω (eréō) G2046, ῥέω (rhéō) G4483, and φημί (phēmí) G5346); to speak or say (by word or writing); answer, bid, bring word, call, command, grant, say (on), speak, tell. Compare λέγω (légō) G3004.
  • G2250 — ἡμέρα (hēméra, hay-mer'-ah): feminine (with ὥρα (hṓra) G5610 implied) of a derivative of ἧμαι (hēmai) (to sit; akin to the base of ἑδραῖος (hedraîos) G1476) meaning tame, i.e. gentle; day, i.e. (literally) the time space between dawn and dark, or the whole 24 hours (but several days were usually reckoned by the Jews as inclusive of the parts of both extremes); figuratively, a period (always defined more or less clearly by the context); age, + alway, (mid-)day (by day, (-ly)), + for ever, judgment, (day) time, while, years
  • G2424 — Ἰησοῦς (Iēsoûs, ee-ay-sooce'): of Hebrew origin (H3091); Jesus (i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord and two (three) other Israelites; Jesus
  • G3450 — μοῦ (moû, moo): the simpler form of ἐμοῦ (emoû) G1700; of me; I, me, mine (own), my
  • G3767 — οὖν (oûn, oon): apparently a primary word; (adverbially) certainly, or (conjunctionally) accordingly; and (so, truly), but, now (then), so (likewise then), then, therefore, verily, wherefore
  • G5083 — τηρέω (tēréō, tay-reh'-o): from τερός (terós) (a watch; perhaps akin to θεωρέω (theōréō) G2334); to guard (from loss or injury, properly, by keeping the eye upon; and thus differing from φυλάσσω (phylássō) G5442, which is properly to prevent escaping; and from κουστωδία (koustōdía) G2892, which implies a fortress or full military lines of apparatus), i.e. to note (a prophecy; figuratively, to fulfil a command); by implication, to detain (in custody; figuratively, to maintain); by extension, to withhold (for personal ends; figuratively, to keep unmarried); by extension, to withhold (for personal ends; figuratively, to keep unmarried); hold fast, keep(- er), (pre-, re-)serve, watch

The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Greek (Textus Receptus, Scrivener 1894) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:

  • G3588 — ὁ (ho, ho): the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom); the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc
