John 11:3

← John 11:2 John 11:3 (KJV) John 11:4 [words of Jesus] →
(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

Strong's References
  • G79 — ἀδελφή (adelphḗ, ad-el-fay'): feminine of ἀδελφός (adelphós) G80; a sister (naturally or ecclesiastically); sister
  • G649 — ἀποστέλλω (apostéllō, ap-os-tel'-lo): from ἀπό (apó) G575 and στέλλω (stéllō) G4724; set apart, i.e. (by implication) to send out (properly, on a mission) literally or figuratively; put in, send (away, forth, out), set (at liberty)
  • G770 — ἀσθενέω (asthenéō, as-then-eh'-o): from ἀσθενής (asthenḗs) G772; to be feeble (in any sense); be diseased, impotent folk (man), (be) sick, (be, be made) weak
  • G846 — αὐτός (autós, ow-tos'): from the particle αὖ (aû) (perhaps akin to the base of ἀήρ (aḗr) G109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative ἑαυτοῦ (heautoû) G1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons; her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which. Compare αὑτοῦ (hautoû) G848.
  • G2396 — ἴδε (íde, id'-eh): second person singular imperative active of εἴδω (eídō) G1492; used as an interjection to denote surprise; lo!; behold, lo, see
  • G2962 — κύριος (kýrios, koo'-ree-os): from κῦρος (kŷros) (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title); God, Lord, master, Sir
  • G3004 — λέγω (légō, leg'-o): a primary verb; properly, to "lay" forth, i.e. (figuratively) relate (in words (usually of systematic or set discourse; whereas ἔπω (épō) G2036 and φημί (phēmí) G5346 generally refer to an individual expression or speech respectively; while ῥέω (rhéō) G4483 is properly to break silence merely, and λαλέω (laléō) G2980 means an extended or random harangue)); by implication, to mean; ask, bid, boast, call, describe, give out, name, put forth, say(-ing, on), shew, speak, tell, utter
  • G3739 — ὅς (hós, hos): probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article ὁ (ho) G3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that; one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc. See also οὗ (hoû) G3757.
  • G3767 — οὖν (oûn, oon): apparently a primary word; (adverbially) certainly, or (conjunctionally) accordingly; and (so, truly), but, now (then), so (likewise then), then, therefore, verily, wherefore
  • G4314 — πρός (prós, pros): a strengthened form of πρό (pró) G4253; a preposition of direction; forward to, i.e. toward (with the genitive case, the side of, i.e. pertaining to; with the dative case, by the side of, i.e. near to; usually with the accusative case, the place, time, occasion, or respect, which is the destination of the relation, i.e. whither or for which it is predicated); about, according to , against, among, at, because of, before, between, (where-)by, for, X at thy house, in, for intent, nigh unto, of, which pertain to, that, to (the end that), X together, to (you) -ward, unto, with(-in). In the comparative case, it denotes essentially the same applications, namely, motion towards, accession to, or nearness at.
  • G5368 — φιλέω (philéō, fil-eh'-o): from φίλος (phílos) G5384; to be a friend to (fond of (an individual or an object)), i.e. have affection for (denoting personal attachment, as a matter of sentiment or feeling; while ἀγαπάω (agapáō) G25 is wider, embracing especially the judgment and the deliberate assent of the will as a matter of principle, duty and propriety: the two thus stand related very much as θέλω (thélō) G2309 and βούλομαι (boúlomai) G1014, or as θυμός (thymós) G2372 and νοῦς (noûs) G3563 respectively; the former being chiefly of the heart and the latter of the head); specially, to kiss (as a mark of tenderness); kiss, love

The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Greek (Textus Receptus, Scrivener 1894) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:

  • G3588 — ὁ (ho, ho): the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom); the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc
