John 13:37

← John 13:36 [words of Jesus] John 13:37 (KJV) John 13:38 [words of Jesus] →
Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.
Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.
Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.

Strong's References
  • G190 — ἀκολουθέω (akolouthéō, ak-ol-oo-theh'-o): from Α (A) G1 (as a particle of union) and κέλευθος (kéleuthos) (a road); properly, to be in the same way with, i.e. to accompany (specially, as a disciple); follow, reach
  • G737 — ἄρτι (árti, ar'-tee): adverb from a derivative of αἴρω (aírō) G142 (compare ἄρτος (ártos) G740) through the idea of suspension; just now; this day (hour), hence(-forth), here(-after), hither(-to), (even) now, (this) present
  • G846 — αὐτός (autós, ow-tos'): from the particle αὖ (aû) (perhaps akin to the base of ἀήρ (aḗr) G109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative ἑαυτοῦ (heautoû) G1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons; her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which. Compare αὑτοῦ (hautoû) G848.
  • G1302 — διατί (diatí, dee-at-ee'): from διά (diá) G1223 and τίς (tís) G5101; through what cause ?, i.e. why?; wherefore, why
  • G1410 — δύναμαι (dýnamai, doo'-nam-ahee): of uncertain affinity; to be able or possible; be able, can (do, + -not), could, may, might, be possible, be of power
  • G2962 — κύριος (kýrios, koo'-ree-os): from κῦρος (kŷros) (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title); God, Lord, master, Sir
  • G3004 — λέγω (légō, leg'-o): a primary verb; properly, to "lay" forth, i.e. (figuratively) relate (in words (usually of systematic or set discourse; whereas ἔπω (épō) G2036 and φημί (phēmí) G5346 generally refer to an individual expression or speech respectively; while ῥέω (rhéō) G4483 is properly to break silence merely, and λαλέω (laléō) G2980 means an extended or random harangue)); by implication, to mean; ask, bid, boast, call, describe, give out, name, put forth, say(-ing, on), shew, speak, tell, utter
  • G3450 — μοῦ (moû, moo): the simpler form of ἐμοῦ (emoû) G1700; of me; I, me, mine (own), my
  • G3756 — οὐ (ou, oo): a primary word; the absolute negative (compare μή (mḗ) G3361) adverb; no or not; + long, nay, neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special, un(-worthy), when, + without, + yet but. See also οὐ μή (ou mḗ) G3364, μῆκος (mēkos) G3372.
  • G4074 — Πέτρος (Pétros, pet'-ros): apparently a primary word; a (piece of) rock (larger than λίθος (líthos) G3037); as a name, Petrus, an apostle; Peter, rock. Compare Κηφᾶς (Kēphâs) G2786.
  • G4671 — σοί (soí, soy): dative case of σύ (sý) G4771; to thee; thee, thine own, thou, thy
  • G4675 — σοῦ (soû, soo): genitive case of σύ (sý) G4771; of thee, thy; X home, thee, thine (own), thou, thy
  • G5087 — τίθημι (títhēmi, tith'-ay-mee): a prolonged form of a primary θέω (théō) theh'-o (which is used only as alternate in certain tenses); to place (in the widest application, literally and figuratively; properly, in a passive or horizontal posture, and thus different from ἵστημι (hístēmi) G2476, which properly denotes an upright and active position, while κεῖμαι (keîmai) G2749 is properly reflexive and utterly prostrate); + advise, appoint, bow, commit, conceive, give, X kneel down, lay (aside, down, up), make, ordain, purpose, put, set (forth), settle, sink down
  • G5228 — ὑπέρ (hypér, hoop-er'): a primary preposition; "over", i.e. (with the genitive case) of place, above, beyond, across, or causal, for the sake of, instead, regarding; with the accusative case superior to, more than; (+ exceeding, abundantly) above, in (on) behalf of, beyond, by, + very chiefest, concerning, exceeding (above, -ly), for, + very highly, more (than), of, over, on the part of, for sake of, in stead, than, to(-ward), very. • G5590 — ψυχή (psychḗ, psoo-khay'): from ψύχω (psýchō) G5594; breath, i.e. (by implication) spirit, abstractly or concretely (the animal sentient principle only; thus distinguished on the one hand from πνεῦμα (pneûma) G4151, which is the rational and immortal soul; and on the other from ζωή (zōḗ) G2222, which is mere vitality, even of plants: these terms thus exactly correspond respectively to the Hebrew H5315, H7307 and H2416); heart (+ -ily), life, mind, soul, + us, + you

The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Greek (Textus Receptus, Scrivener 1894) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:

  • G3588 — ὁ (ho, ho): the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom); the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc
